Fear of the Lord

Jordan Feliz - Witness

The LORD God Almighty is the Fountain of Youth, the Immeasurable Grace, the Giver of Life. For all things are for Him, by Him and through Him.

Let all the earth fear the LORD; Let all the inhabitants of the world stand in awe of Him.

Psalm 33:8

In high school, I read the Bible and asked my Mom more than once, “What does the fear of the LORD mean?”  Her response never satisfied me. “It means to respect Him,” she would say.  Hmmm, no comprendo.  I couldn’t understand what she meant, because my heart had a truckload of sin - this made me foolish with no wisdom.

The fear of the LORD is the beginning of Wisdom, but fools despise wisdom and discipline. Proverbs 1:7

When we don’t fear Him, then our sin doesn’t bother us at all…we could care less!  The fear of the LORD produces a heart willing to be disciplined, corrected, and rebuked.  This is the instruction of wisdom, but I didn’t want wisdom, I wanted my sin.

Your evil with chastise you and your apostasy will reprove you. Know and see that it is evil and bitter to forsake the LORD your God.  The fear of Me is not in you, says the LORD God Almighty. Jeremiah 2:19

The fear of Him was not in me then, but it is now.  His discipline put the fear of God in me and wisdom was birthed.  Who does not fear a lion?

For He is the Lion of the Tribe of Judah, come to judge the earth.

After coming back to Christ, it took me years to finally understand what the fear of the LORD meant. This is what I discovered:  To Fear the LORD comes from wisdom in the heart.  It is not produced from good deeds, sacrifice, tradition, rules or rituals.  It is the condition of the heart which reflects the Fear of the LORD.  This is what the Bible says about the fear of the LORD:

The Fear of the Lord is to:

1. Love Him with your whole heart.

2.  Love others.

3. Obey Him and His commandments – through the righteousness of Jesus.

4. Believe the Word – Jesus and the Word of God.

5. Be teachable – meek.

6. Repent - as He reproofs and disciplines.

7.  Turn from anger and wrath.

8. Flea from evil.

9. Hate evil.

10.  Praise and thank Him - refrain from grumbling and complaining.

11.  Bow down before Him - and Him only.

12.  Delight in Him.

13.  Trust in Him - not your own understanding.

14.  Commit your ways to Him - your plans, your troubles.

15.  Wait for Him.

16.  Ask Him to judge your heart – the Lion of Judah.

17.  Cry out for His wisdom.

18.  Seek Him with your whole heart - like a hidden treasure, cry out for all of Him day and night.

19.  Seek refuge in Him - His presence, His Word, His Name, His body and blood.

20.  Know Him – know His heart.
